Seattle Sounders Win A Game!!

The Seattle Sounders won a game!! Seattle beat ten-man DC United 1-0 on a beauty of a goal by Tyrone Mears in the 88th minute.

The game was surprisingly chippy. For teams that only play once a year, the game saw tons of cards, fouls and even a scrum. DC was foul happy in the first half, and Seattle reciprocated in the second. On the night, referee Silviu Petrescu doled out 6 cards, 1 red, and whistled 27 fouls.

What a red card. Fabian Espindola threw a high elbow at Zach Scott and Petrescu was having none of it. I was hoping for a nil-nil draw before the first whistle, but with Espindola off the pitch, all three points became the goal. Seattle were fortunate to have a man advantage for over an hour, but this was still not an easy win.

We have to admit that our offense is a hot mess. Neagle’s equalizing goal against Portland felt great because it was the first goal the JV scored and hopefully a taste of things to come. But DC, even down a man, gritted out a clean sheet for 61 minutes. Thankfully Mears found himself, alone, at the end of a poor DC clearance and lasered in the winner. Mears has been, arguably, the unsung hero of the first half of the season, but it still is damning when your RB is your trusty striker.

The Sounders looked goal dangerous for a majority of the match, but couldn’t finish. Last night saw the first game where Seattle outshot their opponent in 7 games (going back the NYRB victory). We are hurting at striker. You gotta shoot to win, but one of those shots has to become a goal. Sure, without Oba and Deuce, the dip in quality is significant but Barrett and Neagle have underwhelmed. Neagle had some mighty nice looks he flubbed and Barrett was mainly superfluous, though he did have one helluva header that went just high. The brightest spot up top may have been Andy Craven who came on for Barrett late and showed his quality. Craven has a clean turn, controls the ball well and burns. It feels good to be excited by a young Sounders attacker after underwhelming games from Roldan, Jones and Kovar.

Seattle earned all three points for the first time in a while. The kids keep getting minutes and the trusty vet gutted out the win. We can forget about Portland and move on to Chicago.
