The MLS trade deadline expired yesterday and the Seattle Sounders stood pat. I assume this means that Coach Sigi Schmid is happy with the talent and make-up of his roster. I still believe Seattle could use more youth and talent at the centerback position, but I respect the front office’s decision not to rock the boat.
Professional soccer is played by human beings, and man is a social animal. You don’t have to like your teammates, but it helps. Whether the stories of Eddie Johnson being a locker room cancer were real or not, last year’s team had infamously poor chemistry. This year everyone seems to enjoy each other. Clint Dempsey, Marco Pappa and Obafemi Martins look like they are having fun “trying shit” and “playing pickup.” If your stars are happy, it makes everything else easier.
In a recent post about salary elasticity, I explored the potential for discord in the locker room between the disparate wages that exist in MLS. Somehow, inexplicably, Seattle seems to have avoided all that as the team enjoys playing with each other. However, the tension surrounding the DeAndre Yedlin situation has to be a distraction for the team. And these new rumors about Tottenham are even more scintillating. In Yedlin, one player is seeking to potentially raise his salary and that must have others thinking the same thing. Whether it’s Brad Evans contemplating a new salary (seeing Zusi get retentions funds then a DP contract must chaff him a bit) or Oba remembering Clint vaslty out earns him and then triangulating with Turkey’s rumors to leverage negotiations here, green might be on the minds of the boys in Rave Green.
